Designer Sara Parker has shared her top 10 tips on how to transform a garden space to 'look expensive' and luxurious, even if you're on a budget. In a recent TikTok post, she outlined simple yet effective ways to elevate any outdoor area.
1. Add a Water Feature
For her first tip, Sara recommended adding a water feature, whether it's a small fountain or a wall feature. "It doesn't have to be anything extensive or extreme," she said. "It can even be a simple wall fountain, but I promise it will make a world of difference in your space's vibe!"
2. Create Sections in Garden
She also suggested creating different sections for various activities like entertaining and gardening. "This will make your space feel cohesieve and serve a purpose," she explained. "A garden immedietly elevates any outdoor space."
3. Add Warm Lighting
Cosy lighting sources can make a garden appear more put together. Opt for warm-toned lights rather than blue-toned LEDs, as warm light creates a soft, welcoming glow that flatters natural materials. "Also, incorporate multiple light sources at multiple levels," Sara added. "This adds depth, dimension, and interest."
4. Add Pavers and Pea Gravel
For the ground, Sara urged adding pavers where possible and using pea gravel as an alternative. Pavers create clean pathways and seating areas; placing them diagonally can make them look more luxurious. Pea gravel offers a low-maintenance option for pathways and dry gardens.
5. Climbing Vines and Florals
Incorporating climbing vines and florals on fences or walls adds vertical color and life. Popular choices include Clematis, Climbing Roses, Honeysuckle, Star Jasmine, and Wisteria.
6. Pergolas
Sara noted, "Pergolas make everything feel chic." These structures define seating areas, support climbing plants, and provide partial shade.
7. No Red Mulch
Mulch is beneficial for garden beds, but Sara advised sticking to natural colors like black, brown, or pine straw, avoiding red mulch.
8. Right Planters
Choosing the right planters can elevate the space. "Opt for terracotta, iron, [and] ceramics in various shapes and sizes," she said.
9. Privacy Hedges and Trees
Planting privacy hedges and trees creates a cosy, secluded feel. Popular options include Cherry Laurel, English Yew, Leylandii, and pleached Hornbeam.
10. Add a Focal Point
Finally, Sara recommended adding a focal point, "Whether it's a garden gate, a whimsical fence, or a conversation piece." These can show off personality while complementing the garden's theme.
