Thousands gathered on Friday at the banks of Czechia’s largest pond, Rozmberk, to witness the annual carp harvest, a tradition dating back centuries.
Fishermen in dark green waterproofs waded into frigid waters to scoop carp into nets, destined for Christmas dinner tables nationwide. For many Czech families, carp is an indispensable centrepiece of festive celebrations.
An estimated 100 metric tonnes of fish were expected, with carp making up 90 per cent of the haul, alongside pike and catfish. These are sold at street markets before Christmas Eve, used for fish soup or fried in breadcrumbs.
Spanning 647 hectares, Rozmberk Pond is part of a network of some 500 interconnected ponds and canals completed in the 16th century. The system ensures living conditions for fish and provides reliable flood protection.
Carp is adored in Czechia, believed to bring good fortune if scales are kept in a wallet.
