Writer Nicola Roy has been eating avocado toast daily for months and found that adding crispy chilli oil and honey makes it taste restaurant-quality. The combination of fiery, crunchy topping with sweet honey is addictive and instantly elevates the dish.
Avocados are nutritious and versatile but can taste bland on their own. Roy experimented with various additions before settling on these two storecupboard essentials.
The Two Ingredients
Crispy chilli oil and honey may seem an unusual pairing, but Roy says, "take my word for it — you'll never eat avocados the same way again." The Lao Gan Ma brand of chilli crisp is recommended and available at Asian supermarkets or the world foods aisle. A jar lasts a couple of months as only a small amount is needed.
How to Prepare
Roy prefers not to season the smashed avocado. She mashes it with a fork, spreads it on toast, then adds the chilli oil and a drizzle of honey before digging in.
Where to Buy
Lao Gan Ma can be found at Sainsbury's for £2.75, or a pack of three from Amazon for £7.99.
Other Uses
The pairing also works well with eggs, which make another great accompaniment to avocado.
Roy notes that although the appeal may eventually wear off, after nearly a year this daily staple shows no signs of losing its charm.
