Coffee grounds are mildly acidic, which hydrangeas absolutely thrive on, and are also rich in carbon, helping to introduce a generous amount of organic material into the soil. This helps to break up the earth, making it less dense and drawing earthworms into the flowerbed, which will assist in rebuilding the soil structure.
It will effectively enhance soil aeration so that greater levels of oxygen can reach the roots, while the organic matter will retain more moisture to keep hydrangeas hydrated for considerably longer. They also contain nitrogen, a vital nutrient during spring as it promotes foliage growth, and with sturdy stems, the plant will be capable of supporting larger, heavier blooms.
How to Feed Hydrangeas Coffee Grounds
Using coffee grounds to nourish hydrangeas is the easiest method to enrich the soil ahead of summer and encourage flowering without spending a single penny. Richard added: "Coffee grounds contribute organic matter to the soil, enhancing its texture and increasing its ability to retain water. This is especially beneficial during hot, dry months, when hydrangeas are prone to wilting."
It is always essential to exercise caution when applying organic feed in the garden, as these tend to be considerably more potent than shop-bought fertilisers, so diluting them is strongly advisable. Simply place roughly a tablespoon of coffee grounds into a spray bottle or watering can, then water the hydrangeas with the diluted mixture. Repeat this process monthly until summer begins, and your hydrangeas ought to produce plenty of stunning blooms without requiring you to constantly stand over them with a watering can each day.
Alternatively, you can scatter a fine layer of coffee grounds around the base of the hydrangeas before watering them in if that's more convenient. Simply begin with a modest amount and always use spent coffee grounds left over from making a beverage, as fresh beans will prove far too potent and increase the risk of overfertilising your hydrangeas.
