Homeowners looking to clean grimy patios can use cat litter to tackle tough oil and grease stains, according to Andy McLaughlin, Sales and Operations Director at RF Paving.
Cat Litter Hack
McLaughlin advises: "If you're trying to tackle tough oil and grease stains from your paving, cat litter is the perfect hack that also won't damage your paving. Scatter some over the stain, grind in and leave overnight."
However, he warns: "Make sure to clean up and sweep away before it rains, as added moisture makes it thicker and mud-like, and more difficult to remove."
Vinegar Caution
While a mixture of vinegar and water may be effective for cleaning patios, caution is needed on natural stone paving. McLaughlin warns: "The acid can break down the natural stone surfaces and protective sealants, causing etching, dull spots, and even rusting."
He adds: "For example, vinegar can react with the iron limestone paving, which causes the unsightly rust stains which are tough to budge."
Recommended Cleaners
Instead, he suggests using a pH-neutral outdoor cleaner or a light soap mixed with water. These methods reduce harsh chemicals and high acidity, keeping paving and joints in good condition.
Indoor surface cleaners should be avoided completely, as using wrong solutions could damage paving, sometimes irreversibly.
