Caldicot Castle in Monmouthshire is a top choice for a family day out this summer, with free entry to its grounds, woodland trails, and a tearoom. The Grade I listed castle, set within 55 acres of parkland overlooking the River Nedern, has a history spanning over 900 years.
History and Architecture
Founded by the Normans, the castle was developed as a royal stronghold in the Middle Ages and later restored as a Victorian family home. The site was recognized for its strategic value, with the Romans using the area in the early centuries AD when Caldicot stood on the Via Julia roadway to Caerwent. The Normans built a motte with two baileys and a deep surrounding ditch around 1086, and in 1221, a curtain wall and two corner towers were added.
Over the centuries, the castle had various owners and underwent modifications, transforming from a defensive fortress into a sumptuous residence. In 1855, antiquarian JR Cobb purchased the castle and restored it to its medieval grandeur. Today, it is a heritage treasure and a wedding venue.
Exploring the Grounds
Visitors can wander the castle and grounds to see a blend of medieval and Tudor styles, including the imposing gatehouse, the great hall, and the remains of the inner bailey. A 12-pounder muzzle-loading HMS Foudroyant's cannon is in the courtyard, and the castle dungeon is open for exploration. Guided tours are available on the last Wednesday of every month at 2 p.m., priced at £3.50 per person, including a hot or cold drink from the tearoom.
A new bike hire service allows visitors to discover the castle and country park on two wheels. Booking is required, with payment and hire agreement completed in the tearoom, and a photographic ID is needed. Bookings can be made by emailing the castle.
Family Walks and Trails
Kids will enjoy exploring the wooded trails on foot or by bike. A 1.3-mile flat walking loop circles the castle, passing through mature woodland, open grasslands, and alongside an ornamental pond and the Nedern Brook. For a longer hike, the AllTrails app offers a 3.9-mile trail extending into surrounding fields and wooded sections.
Tea Room and Events
After exploring, the Caldicot Castle Tea Room serves coffee, cake, wine, and beer, with a gift shop on site. The castle is reputed to be haunted and hosts ghost hunting events, including a live-actor scare maze for Halloween from 23rd October to 1st November. Other events include medieval banquets, concerts, and foodie events.
Next month, the Mabon - Fire and Feast Festival takes place from 25 to 27 September, featuring outdoor fire chefs, communal fire pits, live cookery demos, food talks, natural wines, music, and theatrical performances. The Hang Fire Feast offers a four-course banquet under canvas, and the New Wave Producers Market showcases independent Welsh food and drink makers. Tickets are on sale on the Mabon website.
