Cabbage Turns Crispy and Naturally Sweet with 3 Simple Ingredients
Cabbage Crispy and Sweet with 3 Simple Ingredients

Adding three simple ingredients to a pan transforms cabbage into a crispy and naturally sweet dish, according to food blogger Lisa Brown of Downshiftology. Her sautéed cabbage recipe uses onion, garlic, and butter or ghee to caramelize the vegetable in just 20 minutes.

Recipe Converts Cabbage Sceptics

Brown's method involves cooking sliced cabbage with garlic and onions until golden brown. 'Sliced cabbage is sautéed with garlic and onions, then caramelized until golden and naturally sweet. It's absolutely delicious and I guarantee you'll go back for seconds,' she said.

The technique avoids boiling, which often leaves cabbage bland and watery. Instead, the cabbage is cooked in a preheated pan with ghee or a butter-oil combination.

Simple Ingredients and Method

The recipe calls for a large green cabbage, one onion, two garlic cloves, and ghee or a mix of butter and oil. After preheating the pan to medium-high heat, the onion is sautéed for about a minute until softened. Garlic is added and cooked until fragrant. Then the cabbage is added and cooked for 12 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and caramelized. Season with salt and pepper before serving.

Brown recommends serving the sautéed cabbage as a side dish with meat like chicken or shepherd's pie, or as a one-pan meal with shredded meat or eggs for breakfast.
