Britannia Pier in Great Yarmouth has been named the UK's Pier of the Year by the National Piers Society. The pier, which opened in 1901, beat 62 other contenders in the annual contest. Judges highlighted the "significant" investment by the owners, who are spending £2.2million to restore the landmark.
Recognition and Investment
The society praised the work on the Pier Theatre, the Art Moderne entrance, and the "warm welcome" from staff. Co-owner Joseph Abbott said winning was a huge honour and outlined plans to redevelop the whole pier as an all-year-round venue. National Piers Society chair Tim Wardley called Britannia Pier the "worthiest of winners," commending the investment despite challenging economic times.

The pier offers bars, rides, arcades, attractions, and eateries. A sun deck provides sea views. Long John's Showbar is described as Great Yarmouth's "premier night spot," while The Pier Tavern is family-friendly and popular with locals and holidaymakers. Rides include dodgems, a carousel, bungee trampolines, a giant slide, and a ghost train. Amusement arcades feature coin pushers and grabbers, and casino areas offer jackpots up to £500. Food options include ice cream, doughnuts, churros, Krispies Fish & Chip Co., a Seafood Bar, and an American Burger Bar. The Pier Theatre hosts stand-up comedians, tribute acts, family entertainment, and variety shows.

A frequent reviewer in June called it a "good old-fashioned" pier and an "excellent experience." Another in May said they were "extremely impressed" by "this absolute gem," noting friendly staff, stunning and modern premises, and quality. A fourth reviewer described the revamped pier as "amazing" with a "wonderful" arcade.
