Food storage specialists at Green Wraps have revealed a simple trick to keep bread fresh: placing a celery stick inside the bread bag. The vegetable's high water content—about 95% of its weight—helps the bread retain moisture as it would otherwise lose it.
How celery preserves bread
The experts explained: “The unique properties of celery make it an interesting candidate for preserving bread. One of the most remarkable properties of celery is its high water content, which is about 95% of its weight. By placing one or two celery stems inside a bread bag, the moisture within the stems can be transferred to the surrounding environment.”
Celery also contains natural antibacterial compounds such as phthalates and apigenin, which help ward off mould. Additionally, the vegetable releases ethylene gas, a plant hormone that slows down starch degradation in bread, preserving its fresh texture.
Best storage practices
For optimal results, keep bread in a bread bin, fabric bag, or paper bag, as these provide ventilation while protecting the loaf. Avoid leaving bread in its original supermarket wrapping, as plastic retains excessive moisture and encourages mould growth.
Position bread storage away from windows, cookers, or other heat sources, since warmth accelerates staling. Refrigeration should be avoided, as cold causes starch molecules to crystallise, speeding up staleness.
By storing bread with a couple of celery sticks in a cool corner of the kitchen, freshness can be extended by several days or potentially up to a week beyond its usual lifespan.
