A significant wildfire in Blaenavon, Torfaen, has been burning for four days, scorching an area the size of around 300 football pitches. Thick smoke has drifted across south Wales, affecting communities as far as 30 miles away.
Fire Details
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service (SWFRS) reported that the blaze covers 200 hectares with a perimeter of about 5km. The fire started on Sunday and has destroyed mixed land including fern, gorse, and bracken. Crews remain on site and are expected to stay for several days.
Smoke Impact
Smoke has been detected in Cardiff, Caerphilly, Newport, and Rhondda Cynon Taf. Public Health Wales warned that smoke can irritate eyes, nose, and throat, causing coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed, and if travelling, to keep vehicle windows shut and set air conditioning to recirculation mode. Those with symptoms that persist indoors should seek advice from their GP or NHS 111.
Response and Challenges
The Welsh Government activated crisis management arrangements due to the number of significant wildfires. The Ministry of Defence confirmed no helicopters are available to assist ground crews. The terrain, changing weather, and scale of the blaze continue to pose challenges. Specialist equipment, including 4x4 vehicles, drones, and i-cutters, is being used. Local farmers have offered vehicles to help firefighters.
Local farmer Kyle Williams estimated that 40-60% of common land has been lost. Visibility in the Blaenavon area remains poor due to the fire.
