A binman known as the No1 Binman on TikTok has shared advice on preventing maggots in food waste bins, as many UK households begin using them for the first time. The Conservative Government announced £295 million in funding in 2024 for weekly food waste collections, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by diverting food waste from landfill to energy-generating plants. However, some homeowners have complained about smells and pests like flies, maggots, foxes, and rats.
Tips to Keep Maggots Away
The binfluencer, who regularly shares waste disposal tips, responded to follower queries about pest prevention, especially during warm weather. He recommended double-bagging smelly food, squeezing out air, and sealing it tightly. He advised keeping bins out of direct sunlight to reduce heat and smells that attract flies. Keeping the lid closed prevents flies from entering and laying eggs. Freezing food waste until collection day also helps. He added that salt can kill existing maggots.
