Best Time to Water Plants Isn't Morning, Experts Say

Gardening experts have revealed the best time to water garden plants, and it may surprise many gardeners who believe morning is ideal. According to Blooming Expert, the optimal window is late afternoon or early evening, specifically between 4pm and 6pm, when there is still some light and warmth in the air.

Why Timing Matters

Timing is crucial for several reasons. The most obvious is to prevent evaporation, giving plants a chance to absorb moisture before the heat of the day draws it out of the soil. Choosing the right time can also help ward off certain diseases and reduce stress on plants. Additionally, experts recommend avoiding overhead watering and, in some cases, considering the type of water used depending on the plant.

Evening Watering Benefits

The experts point out that watering in the early evening is better than letting plants suffer irreversible damage until the next morning. During hot weather, soil can dry out rapidly, leaving plants in urgent need of moisture. The residual heat through the night allows some surface moisture to evaporate, so the plant's immediate need for water can outweigh usual risks.

For those watering late in the evening, care should be taken to water directly at the root zone rather than the leaves, as wet foliage can lead to diseased plants.

Gardener Insights

On the Gardening Hints and Tips Facebook page, gardeners shared their preferences. Shannon R-Lease said, "I do evenings. When the sun sets over the house. Between five and 5:30pm." Margaret Collinsworth wrote, "I like to water in the evenings. It gives the plants overnight to drink." Shane Paul commented, "I do my plants in the evening, but lawn sprinklers are set to go off at 6am for 30 minutes. Shouldn't leave a lawn damp overnight on purpose, can lead to more disease growth, and middle of the day, it just evaporates." Jack Pockl added, "Water in the evening - the plant and soil retain more moisture. Watering in the morning or afternoon allows the water to evaporate."

Watering Amounts

The quantity of water a plant requires differs based on location, plant type, soil composition, and other factors. Most plants receive adequate water from spring rainfall and only need watering during dry spells. When summer arrives, they may need substantial watering depending on heat levels.
