Expert Reveals Best Time to Water Plants During UK Heatwave
Best Time to Water Plants in Heatwave Revealed

As the UK experiences a heatwave, gardeners are being urged to take extra care of their plants, with expert horticulturalist Sue Pomeroy of Brightwater Holidays settling the long-standing debate on the best time to water. Pomeroy advises that gardeners should "always" water plants in the cool of the morning, targeting the roots rather than foliage to prevent scorching from water droplets in full sun.

Why Morning Watering Is Essential

Pomeroy explains that watering at the roots is crucial because roots need moisture most. She warns against watering in full sun, as water droplets on leaves can act like magnifying glasses and scorch the plant. While evening watering is acceptable, it can attract pests, making morning the optimal time.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

According to Pomeroy, beginner gardeners often overwater foliage instead of roots, water at the hottest part of the day, or underestimate how quickly pots and raised beds dry out in extreme heat. Effective protection is key during a heatwave, as soil can rapidly crack and become parched if neglected.

Protecting Plants with Gravel Mulch

Pomeroy recommends creating a bed topped with about six inches of pea gravel. Gardeners should remove soil or compost from plant roots, either by root washing or gentle shaking, then plant carefully into the gravel, pushing it securely around the plants. The roots grow down through the gravel into the cooler, moist soil below, protecting them from drying winds and intense sun. It is crucial that the gravel measures at least five to six inches deep.

Monitoring for Pests

Hot weather can cause greenfly to breed rapidly, so gardeners should watch for them on fresh shoots and delicate growth. If greenfly becomes a problem, Pomeroy advises spraying affected plants with a few drops of washing-up liquid diluted in water, doing this only in the evening so the foliage has time to dry by morning.
