Bellingham Show cancels sheep section amid Bluetongue outbreak
Bellingham Show cancels sheep section over Bluetongue

Organisers of Bellingham Show have cancelled this weekend's Sheep Section following a recent outbreak of Bluetongue virus, despite receiving a record number of entries for the category.

The decision was described as "the safest and most responsible decision for everyone" in a public announcement. The remainder of the event will still go ahead as planned.

Veterinary advice behind the decision

Bluetongue virus can infect animals such as sheep, cattle, deer, goats, llamas and alpacas. In rare cases it can also affect dogs. The disease is mainly spread by biting midges. Symptoms vary between breeds but can include discharge from the eyes or nose, fever, reddening of the skin and swelling around the mouth.

Organisers said: "Unfortunately, due to the recent outbreaks of Bluetongue and cases moving closer to our area, we have had to make the very difficult decision to cancel the Sheep Section at this weekend’s Bellingham Show.

"This has not been an easy decision, especially after receiving a record number of sheep entries this year. However, following veterinary advice and guidance, we feel that cancelling the section is the safest and most responsible decision for everyone."

Exhibitors contacted and show continues

All sheep judges and exhibitors have been contacted by email. Organisers thanked everyone who entered and supported the Sheep Section this year, adding: "We are incredibly disappointed, but don’t worry — the sheep will be back in 2027!"

Earlier this week, Glendale Agricultural Society also announced that the Sheep and Goat Section has been cancelled at this weekend's Glendale Show in Wooler, Northumberland. The remainder of both events will still go ahead.

The rest of Bellingham Show is going ahead as planned, with organisers saying: "The rest of Bellingham Show is going ahead as planned, with plenty happening right across the showfield! We hope you’ll still come along and join us for a fantastic day at Bellingham Show!"
