Beefeater, the nostalgic pub chain, has announced it will permanently close all 106 of its remaining UK restaurants on September 10, 2026. Parent company Whitbread is withdrawing entirely from the branded standalone restaurant market, ending the 52-year-old steakhouse chain along with sister brands Brewers Fayre and Bar + Block.
Cost pressures blamed for closure
Whitbread chief executive Dominic Paul directly blamed crippling cost pressures stemming from Government policy, specifically recent increases in employer National Insurance contributions and business rates, which rendered the traditional pub-restaurant business model unsustainable. Whitbread will now focus on its Premier Inn hotel operation.
Restructuring plan and job losses
The closures are part of a £250 million restructuring plan, with approximately 600 new Premier Inn rooms to be built within converted restaurant spaces. Many former Beefeater sites will become integrated kitchens for hotel guests only, no longer operating as public houses or walk-in dining. Locations that fall short of hotel return targets will be disposed of or leased back. The restructuring across Beefeater and Brewers Fayre places 3,800 jobs at risk in the UK and Ireland. Whitbread has initiated consultation processes and aims to redeploy affected staff where possible.
Social media reaction
Following the announcement, many Brits shared memories online. One person wrote: "Until I went to university the only restaurant I'd ever been to was a Beefeater. We'd go for various family birthdays. I absolutely loved it. A steak or a mixed grill which I never got at home, followed by a Knickerbocker Glory. Fantastic times. I went back a couple of years ago. The place looked run down. I feel sad about this but I guess the fact I hadn't been to one for 30 years is part of the problem." Another shared: "When I was first working away from home, we did events work and the big treat was a Beefeater on the last night. It was genuinely an event because we were used to Neefeater being the family occasion that we would get a few times per year." A third contributed: "The profiterole surprise... the crispy potato skins... the memories lol. We have one about 35 mins from where I live now but I looked at the menu and it looked completely s**t so have never taken the family despite the fond childhood memories of going regularly with my mum dad and sisters." Others commented on emotional attachments and the chain's decline.
