Even as the weather warms up, mould remains a persistent problem in homes across the UK. Despite frequent cleaning, it often returns, with windowsills being especially vulnerable. While many resort to expensive specialist sprays, experts suggest a simple and inexpensive solution using two common kitchen items.
The Simple Solution: Bleach and Kitchen Roll
Allan Reid, a uPVC specialist and founder of Art Windows and Doors, explains that mould around windows usually indicates excess moisture. Condensation on glass or windowsills is often the culprit. Cleaning visible mould is not enough if moisture persists. He recommends diluting bleach, soaking kitchen roll in the solution, leaving it on the mould, then wiping it away.
Preventing Mould with Daily Habits
To keep mould at bay, adopt a few daily habits. Wipe away condensation frequently to prevent moisture from sitting on surfaces. Ensure rooms are well ventilated by opening windows daily, even in winter, for just a few minutes. Avoid drying laundry indoors, especially near windows or external walls.
Reid notes that if mould repeatedly appears in the same spot, there may be underlying issues such as excessive moisture or poor airflow. Addressing these root causes is key to long-term prevention.
