Grout can be cleaned and whitened in as little as 10 minutes using a simple paste made from baking soda and water, according to tile specialists. The one-ingredient kitchen staple offers a gentle yet effective way to lift stains without the need for heavy scrubbing.
Dirty grout lines sit slightly lower than the surrounding tile surface, so regular wiping is often not enough to remove stubborn stains or built-up grime. Cleaning the grout can refresh the look of a kitchen or bathroom without any added expense.
Why vinegar is not recommended
While white vinegar is a popular household cleaning remedy, bathroom experts at Duravit caution against using it on grout. They said: "This household remedy isn't really suitable for cleaning grout in the bathroom because vinegar, due to its corrosive properties, attacks the grout and can make it porous over time."
Instead, they recommend baking soda, describing it as a "tried-and-true method" for cleaning stained bathroom grout.
How to whiten grout with baking soda
To use the method, combine baking soda with water to form a thick paste. Spread the paste over the grout and leave it to work for around an hour, according to Duravit. It can then be washed off with water, and any leftover grime can be removed with a cloth.
Specialists at Hyerion Tiles also recommend baking soda for tackling grout but suggest the paste only needs to be left for 10 minutes before scrubbing. They said: "A paste of baking soda and water is a gentle yet surprisingly effective cleaner for mild to moderate stains. Its mild abrasiveness helps lift dirt and grime."
They added: "This can effectively clean mild to moderate staining without damaging the grout. It's a great starting point for regular grout maintenance too."
Preparation and aftercare
Regardless of which natural cleaning approach is chosen, the tiled surface should be pre-cleaned first. This removes loose dirt and debris, enabling the cleaning solution to work more effectively on the grout.
Households should always ensure proper ventilation when cleaning by opening a window or running a fan. After cleaning, rinse the grout with clean water to eliminate any residue and leave the tiles gleaming. These steps deliver the best cleaning outcomes and help safeguard tiles and grout over time.
