Jill Clancy, a 50-year-old from Galston, Ayrshire, has shared her remarkable weight loss journey, shedding 8 stone and 6 pounds (8st 6lbs) after a knee injury forced her to reassess her health.
Injury Sparks Change
In October 2020, Clancy joined a Slimming World group led by consultant Emma Allan, declaring she was "in this for the long haul." Her motivation came after a dog walk where her knee suddenly gave way. Hospital tests revealed a meniscus tear requiring surgery. "I had just turned 50 and I didn't want to be an old, crippled 50 year-old out of work," she said. "I knew I had to do something about it."
Commitment to the Plan
Clancy had tried Slimming World before, but this time felt different. "My head was in the right place. I knew it would be a marathon, not a sprint. I wanted my life back," she admitted. She attended group every week, even joining local groups while on UK holidays. Her previous diet included crisps, crackers, cheese, wine, and takeaways, but she transformed her eating habits to include vegetables, fruit, yoghurt, couscous, and protein-packed meals like eggs, chicken, sardines, salmon, and steak. She eliminated trigger foods and still weighs her milk, opting for pre-portioned cheese.
Results and New Lifestyle
Now 8st 6lbs lighter, Clancy runs 10Ks, trains for her first half marathon, and participates in HYROX, Hybrid, and The Gauntlet events. She has discovered "muscles I never knew I had." Her clothing size dropped from a size 24 to size 10, and even size 8 on top. "The loose skin I have now is just an award for all the weight I've lost," she laughed.
Emotional Milestones
Rediscovering clothes shopping was emotional: "I went from verging on a size 24 to fitting into some size 10s— and even size 8 on top. At first I thought I needed to buy everything because it all fit, but now I know I can pick and choose."
Gratitude and Advice
Clancy credits her 4.30pm Galston group and consultant Emma Allan for her success. "Slimming World will change your life if you want it to. If you love food and feeling full, this is the plan for you. Don't think of it like a diet, because it isn't. It's the healthiest eating plan you'll ever find," she said. "I am proud of what I've achieved and I can only thank Slimming World and especially my group. I now truly am living my life to the fullest. I just wish I had done it 30 years ago."
