A food reviewer known as Becca, or 'beccaeatseverything', bought packs of British strawberries from three different supermarkets to see if price reflects taste. She tested Aldi's wonky strawberries, Tesco's British strawberries, and Waitrose No. 1 Speciality Strawberries.
Aldi's Wonky Strawberries
Becca started with the cheapest option: Aldi's wonky strawberries, priced at £1.19 (though she noted a 99p version was sold out). She described the first berry as "the most perfect strawberry I have ever seen in my life" and after tasting said: "It's juicy, it's got a sweetness, there's a little bit of tartness, but there's a good flavour." She scored them nine out of ten, adding: "That's gonna be hard to beat."
Tesco's British Strawberries
The mid-range option was Tesco British strawberries at £2.70 (or £2.50 online). Becca was disappointed, calling them "tasteless" and "watery". She explained: "It has a bit of a sweeter taste, but not in like a nice strawberry sweet taste. It more just tastes like sort of sugar water."
Waitrose No. 1 Speciality Strawberries
For the most expensive, Becca chose Waitrose No. 1 speciality strawberries at £4. She picked "the most perfect looking strawberry" and said: "Now that is what a strawberry tastes like." She gave them nine out of ten, matching Aldi's score. However, she clarified that the scores were based on value for flavour: for £1.19, Aldi's were "absolutely banging", while Waitrose's were better overall but very expensive.
