Aldi: Freeze Bananas to Keep Them Fresh Longer

Aldi has shared a food storage tip to help bananas stay fresh and avoid turning brown or mushy. The supermarket, recently named the UK's cheapest for the second consecutive month, recommends slicing bananas and placing them in the freezer.

This advice comes from a partnership with food storage expert Kate Hall, who offered tips on keeping staples like milk, potatoes, and bananas fresh. Research by Aldi found that the average Brit discards £387 worth of food annually, with seven in ten admitting they buy food knowing it may end up in the bin.

How to Freeze Bananas

Kate Hall suggests peeling and slicing bananas before freezing. Spread the slices on a lined tray to prevent clumping, then transfer to a resealable freezer bag. Frozen bananas are ideal for making banana ice cream or chocolate peanut butter bites.

The same method can be applied to other fruits and vegetables. Cucumbers, for example, can be sliced and frozen to use as ice cubes in smoothies or blitzed into a sorbet.

Reducing Food Waste

Kate emphasised that freezing is a simple way to extend the life of food and stretch budgets. She noted that many people are unaware of how much can be frozen if done correctly.

Luke Emery, National Sustainability Director at Aldi UK, highlighted the company's commitment to reducing food waste across its supply chain. He said the goal is to help shoppers minimize waste while getting more value from their groceries, noting that freezing is an easy but underused practice.
