Following Alan Titchmarsh's simple basil planting tips, my herb garden is now thriving. The gardening expert shared his essential guidance in a YouTube video for GrowForItHQ, and his recommendations helped me turn my basil into a flourishing plant all summer.
Key Tips for Healthy Basil
Titchmarsh emphasized that basil needs plenty of sunlight and warned against planting too close together to avoid fungus. He advised spacing plants 10cm apart to ensure air circulation. He described the process as a "wonderful job," noting the glorious aromas and that basil loves warm, sunny weather but shrivels in colder conditions.
After planting, he said he had a "lovely herb pot that looks good on the table," perfect for many dishes.
My Basil Transformation
Acting on his advice, I divided my basil plant to give each stem more room and improve airflow. I also moved it to a brighter spot with ample sunlight, and during warm spells, I ensured consistent watering to prevent the compost from drying out. This is crucial for container-grown plants, which lose moisture faster than those in borders.
These simple changes made my basil healthier and more robust, with lusher foliage ideal for pizzas and salads. To promote bushier growth, I plan to pinch out the growing tips to prevent legginess.
Additional Expert Advice
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) notes that container basil can run short of nutrients, recommending an organic-based, balanced liquid fertiliser. They advise avoiding potassium-rich feeds like tomato feed, as these encourage flowering.
