Add Vegetables to Mayo for Healthier Crunchy Tuna Sandwich
Add Veg to Mayo for Crunchy Tuna Sandwich

Tuna sandwiches are a speedy, budget-friendly and protein-rich staple enjoyed by countless people throughout the UK. While the traditional recipe is difficult to improve upon, experts suggest that one straightforward addition to the mayonnaise can make it considerably more nutritious.

Expert's Twist: Add Vegetables

Expert cook Alyssa Brantley from food website Everyday Maven shared: "You'll love how simple it is to mix up and the fun twist it takes on a classic favourite even more. You might as well just grab your ingredients now because I'm sure you're already craving some, just like I am right now."

The twist in question: vegetables. By incorporating carrots, celery, onion and more, the tuna filling takes on a fresher taste and a satisfying crunch that pairs wonderfully with the fish.

Alyssa added: "I've been making this recipe for years as it was the most popular item on my small catering business menu back in grad school, and it still holds up as the best tuna salad I've ever eaten."

This tuna filling requires just 30 minutes to prepare and yields up to eight portions. You can also swap out the bread for lettuce wraps, salads, or serve it atop an avocado.

How to Make the Tuna Filling

What You'll Need

  • Four cans of tuna
  • A 1/2 cup of chopped carrots
  • A 1/2 cup of chopped celery
  • A 1/2 cup of chopped parsley
  • A 1/3 cup of chopped red onion
  • Four medium scallions chopped
  • One clove of garlic
  • 10 tablespoons of mayonnaise
  • One teaspoon of salt
  • A 1/4 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper

Method

To get started, open your tuna cans and drain the water thoroughly. Transfer the tuna into a large mixing bowl and set aside.

Next, place your carrot, celery, parsley, red onion and scallion into a food processor fitted with a chopping blade. Be sure to measure each ingredient after chopping to ensure you have the correct quantities.

Should you not have a food processor to hand, simply dice the ingredients as finely as possible, or run them through a cheese grater for an even finer texture.

Once prepared, transfer your ingredients into a bowl along with the tuna and a small clove of crushed garlic.

Add the mayonnaise, salt and pepper, then use a fork to gently break up any particularly large chunks of tuna before combining all the ingredients thoroughly. Taste and adjust the seasoning as required.
