Gardeners can ensure their tomatoes grow juicy and plump by adding a key item to the soil: tomato feed. Gardening expert Ish, in a video for Cherry Lane Garden Centres, advises applying tomato feed once a week throughout the rest of the summer.
Why Tomato Feed Is Essential
In August, tomato plants start growing wild and ripening, making them thirsty and hungry. Tomato feed is rich in nutrients like potassium and phosphorus, which encourage larger, more succulent fruits. Without it, plants may struggle.
How to Apply Tomato Feed
Mix a capful of feed with four to five litres of water in a watering can. Apply directly to the compost around the base of the plant, avoiding the foliage, to give the plants a good soak. This boosts soil nutrients and prompts the plant to produce more tomatoes.
Additional Watering Tips
Keep the soil reasonably moist during summer. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, as fluctuating between wet and dry conditions stresses the plant, leading to fewer tomatoes and potential splitting.
