A cheap dishwasher tablet costing just 9p can restore oven glass to a spotless shine, according to cleaning enthusiasts online.
Simple method to remove grease
The tip emerged in the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook group, where a member asked for advice on cleaning oven glass that was covered in stubborn grease. She wrote: "Hi all. Any recommendations for cleaning this oven glass and if it's salvageable? I've recently moved house and the grease just won't budge! Any ideas?"
Group members suggested using a damp dishwasher tablet to rub the glass. One person said: "Rub a damp dishwasher tablet over it. Good luck." Another wrote: "Dishwasher tablet (cheap ones are best) rubbed on it after dipping in water."
A third commented: "Wet a dishwasher tablet and rub it on. It's a bit labour intensive but the results are fab." A fourth echoed: "Take a dish washer tablet (not the liquid one, the sold pressed powder) dip in water and rub the glass. I just mine few hours ago, and oven spotless. I just bought cheap tablets."
Why it works
Damp dishwasher tablets are effective because they contain grease-cutting ingredients and have an abrasive surface that gently buffs away grime. A pack of 40 tablets costs £3.70 from Tesco, making each tablet just 9p.
Other suggestions from the group included using a mixture of fairy washing up liquid and bicarbonate of soda on a warm oven, wire wool with cream cleaner, or a Brillo pad with some elbow grease.
