Cat Owners Urged to Use 65p Supermarket Item to Keep Pets Hydrated in Heatwave
65p Supermarket Item Helps Hydrate Cats in Heatwave

A cat owner from the Cotswolds has shared a straightforward 65p trick using a supermarket product to help keep feline friends hydrated during the UK heatwave, a critical step in preventing dehydration that can lead to potentially fatal kidney complications.

Simple Tuna Water Hack

The owner, who has two cats named Pearl and Louie and over 36,600 Instagram followers, posted a video showing her method. She held up a can of Tesco own-brand tuna steaks in spring water, priced at 65p for 145g, and emphasized that similar products work as long as the tuna is in spring water, not oil or brine.

Using a fork, she transferred the tuna chunks and water into a jug, topped it up halfway with additional water, and stirred thoroughly. She then poured some of the liquid with smaller tuna pieces into a water bowl for her cat to drink.

"One can of tuna in spring water, add to a jug of water, and feed in small portions," she wrote in the caption. "Keep it in your fridge covered and let them enjoy throughout the week."

Importance of Hydration for Cats

Dehydration in cats can lead to serious health issues, including kidney problems. According to Cats Protection, ensuring cats have access to plenty of fresh water is crucial during hot weather. They also advise keeping cats indoors between 10am and 3pm, providing shaded areas outdoors, and placing water bowls away from food, as many cats dislike water near their meals.

The tuna water trick makes drinking more appealing, encouraging cats to consume more fluids. Owners should also place multiple water bowls around the home.
