With house prices rising and the cost of living mounting, more households are embracing DIY projects. Gardens are a particular focus, as professional updates and renovations can run into thousands of pounds. Yet tackling improvements yourself can prove both enjoyable and economical, according to one specialist.
Helen Godsiff, brand manager at Eurocell, has revealed which home improvements can help create an attractive, welcoming outdoor space. Better still, they are all affordable options.
Refresh the Fencing
The expert said: "The border of a garden can make or break the overall appearance of the space. Take a look at any worn-out fence panels that could do with a revamp. Replacing damaged panels and giving the entire perimeter a fresh coat of paint can instantly transform the look and feel of the garden."
Install Raised Flower Beds
Raised flower beds offer an ideal way to inject vibrant colour into outdoor areas. Selecting flowers in shades of blue, yellow and pink can establish a cheerful, energising ambience. The expert said: "This does not have to be an overly complex job, as it can be put together with four lengths of timber, wood screws, and a good clear-up of any existing turf before placing it down. It is also worth giving it a coat of paint to give it a modern edge, colours like matte black and anthracite grey should do the trick."
Consider a Solar Water Fountain
Water fountains can serve as an instant centrepiece, and appear far more costly than they actually are. Solar-powered varieties also offer a sustainable alternative, eliminating the need for frequent battery changes.
Self-Build Garden Room
Helen said: "Installing a self-build garden room can completely redefine your outdoor space. Whether used as a garden bar, home gym or office, it provides a stylish and multifunctional addition to any home. It is also an easier way of transforming the space, as the self-build element helps to make it a more cost-effective option, meaning more can be put into styling the space to suit individual needs, whether that is a workout, complete relaxation, or a dedicated workspace, making it a highly flexible addition to the home."
Simple Lighting Transformation
Lighting can boost the garden's appeal without breaking the bank, casting distinctive pools of light throughout. This could involve attaching fairy lights to empty jars and dotting them around the garden. Fitting LED strips along walkways is another brilliant suggestion, making the area visually impressive after dark.
Herb Wall
Greenery gives a garden the feel of a "true oasis", and one straightforward method of achieving this is by installing a herb wall. The expert suggested basil, mint, and rosemary as they require minimal upkeep and can be incorporated into a wide variety of meals.
