Rats Active in UK Summer; Simple Solution Available
As temperatures rise across Britain, rats become particularly active from March to October, their main breeding season. These rodents carry disease and cause destruction, making them unwelcome in homes. However, a natural kitchen staple costing just £1 can keep them away.
£1 Cayenne Pepper: Effective Natural Repellent
Chilli or cayenne pepper has proven highly effective against rats. A jar of cayenne pepper is available at Asda for £1, making it one of the most affordable deterrents. According to Native Pest Management, "The intense spiciness of cayenne pepper is not just for cooking; it can also discourage rats by irritating their sensitive noses." Rats find pungent odours disagreeable, and cayenne pepper powder, chilli flakes, or chilli oil can cause respiratory irritation, encouraging rodents to avoid treated areas.
DIY Rat Deterrent Recipe
A powerful natural deterrent can be made with household ingredients: 1 tablespoon of cayenne pepper powder or chilli flakes, 1 quart of water, and a small drop of washing-up liquid. Mix the chilli with water in a saucepan, bring to a boil, then let it cool completely—the longer it cools, the more potent it becomes. Add a drop of washing-up liquid and decant into a spray bottle. Apply the solution to spots where rats have been seen or where infestations could occur.
Application and Safety Precautions
Alternatively, distribute cayenne pepper or raw chilli flakes around potential entry points such as gaps near pipes, drains, roof openings, windows, doors, or damaged air bricks. For chilli oil, mix with water in a spray bottle and apply in affected areas. Reapply after heavy rainfall or dampness. Exercise caution when handling chilli products, especially around children and pets, as they can cause irritation.
