As temperatures rise across the UK, rats become more active, especially between March and October. These rodents bring disease and damage, making them unwelcome guests. However, an affordable solution exists: cayenne pepper, costing just £1 at Asda.
Why cayenne pepper works
According to Native Pest Management: "The intense spiciness of cayenne pepper is not just for cooking; it can also discourage rats by irritating their sensitive noses." Rats detest spicy odours, and cayenne pepper powder, chilli flakes, or chilli oil can irritate their respiratory systems, driving them away.
Simple DIY rat repellent recipe
To make a potent spray, combine one tablespoon of cayenne pepper or chilli flakes with about 946ml (one quart) of water in a saucepan. Bring to the boil, then let it cool completely. The longer it cools, the more concentrated it becomes. Add a small amount of washing-up liquid, then pour into a spray bottle.
Apply the mixture to areas where rats have been seen or may enter. Alternatively, scatter cayenne pepper or chilli flakes around potential entry points like pipes, drains, roof openings, windows, doors, and damaged air bricks. For chilli oil, mix it with water in a spray bottle and apply directly.
Reapply after heavy rain or damp conditions. Handle chilli products with care, especially around children and pets, as they can cause irritation.
