A three-legged rescue dog named Laika has been overlooked by more than 22,000 potential adopters despite being described as a "superstar" who can fit into almost any home. The two-year-old mixed breed was saved from the streets after badly injuring one of her legs, which had to be amputated.
Laika has not let losing a leg hold her back and gets around brilliantly as a "tripaw". She can still run, jump and play and is described as an active, fun-loving girl who enjoys moderate walks and plenty of enrichment. The rescue says she is "totally fearless" and incredibly easy-going, with a personality that could allow her to settle into almost any home.
Looking for a forever home in Essex
Laika is currently looking for her forever home in Essex, where she is available to meet potential adopters in Brentwood. She is particularly fond of people and would love nothing more than to have a family of her own. Laika is said to be brilliant with both men and women, as well as children, and will happily greet strangers who enter her garden with excitement.
The dog also loves a cuddle and is used to walking on a lead. She regularly goes for walks, can be trusted off lead and will return when called.
'Nobody willing to go the distance'
Despite her loving nature, Laika has struggled to find someone willing to take her home permanently. The rescue says more than 22,000 people saw her previous adoption post, resulting in plenty of "interest" - but nobody went as far as completing an application, home check and adoption interview.
They are now appealing for people to keep sharing Laika's story in the hope it reaches the right person. Laika has also already experienced the heartbreak of being returned after being adopted. She was rejected and sent back after just three weeks with her adopter because of a vet bill relating to what the rescue described as a "tiny insignificant paw abrasion".
The rescue added: "Sometimes we are in disbelief. Can you make it right for Laika and be her forever home?"
'She has lived with dogs, cats and a tortoise'
Laika's previous experiences suggest she could be a particularly adaptable addition to the right family. She has lived with dogs, cats and even a tortoise and was described as "brilliant" with them. She is also able to be left alone for a few hours and is said to be great with other dogs.
The rescue is looking for a loving home that will accept and cherish an active young dog with three legs. A short foster-to-adopt arrangement could also be considered for someone who wants to make sure Laika is the right fit for their home.
She is spayed, microchipped and vaccinated and weighs around 15kg. For now, Laika remains in Essex and is waiting for someone to look beyond the fact she has three legs and see the affectionate, energetic and incredibly adaptable dog underneath.
