Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made their return to the UK on August 26, moving back to Britain after six years in California. The couple stepped down from royal duties in early 2020 and moved to the US with their young son shortly after.
Three homes retained
Despite their move to the UK, Harry and Meghan are reportedly keeping hold of their nine-bedroom Montecito mansion in California. The couple also have a home in Portugal, which they stayed in during their European holiday in early July.
Their trip to Portugal, which Meghan shared pictures of on her Instagram account, took place just before Harry returned to the UK. Meghan and their two children are thought to have remained in Portugal before joining him a few days later.
Security costs under scrutiny
News of the Sussexes' new home has sparked outrage over Harry's repeated requests for police protection in the UK, even though he was living in the US. Royal fans have now pointed out that, since the couple can afford three high-priced homes, they should be able to afford their own security.
Their Montecito home, known as the Chateau of Riven Rock, lies on seven acres and boasts a swimming pool, tennis courts, and a small cinema. It has been reported that Harry and Meghan would be subject to a monthly repayment of £27,729 [$37,566], totalling £332,749 [$450,792] per year, for their Montecito home.
New life in the Cotswolds
The Portuguese residence they have was reportedly acquired for £6.3 million in 2023. The couple moved to the Cotswolds last week, though the exact location remains unknown.
Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, now aged seven and five, are currently enrolled in a British school, with the new term set to begin within days.
