Kim Ju-ae, the teenage daughter of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, is being actively groomed to assume the role of supreme leader, according to analysts who point to a remarkable shift in her public presentation. The only child of Kim and his wife Ri Sol-ju, she was first pictured in 2022 at around nine years old during an inspection of a Hwasong-17 intercontinental ballistic missile. Since then, she has been seen firing pistols and sniper rifles, and has been labeled the world's "most dangerous 13-year-old" as the regime showcases her alongside ballistic missiles, military parades, and nuclear weapons tests.
Staged Kiss and Family Dynamics
At a New Year's concert on January 1 at the Rungrado May Day Stadium, a choreographed moment saw Kim lean in and tap his daughter's chair. She responded by cupping his head and kissing him on the cheek, then looked to her mother for approval. Ri Sol-ju smiled and continued clapping. South Korean media interpreted the embrace as a display of Kim's physical proximity to power, despite controversy over its intimacy.
Exemption from Portrait Badge Rules
North Korean regulations require officials and citizens to wear pin badges bearing portraits of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il. Only Kim Jong-un and his wife have been publicly seen without them. However, Kim Ju-ae also appears exempt, wearing a red flower or magnolia brooch instead. On International Women's Day, she wore a magnolia brooch styled to resemble the national flag, which South Korean observers suggested was intended to claim her as a daughter of the nation.
Style Evolution: From Child to Heir
Kim Ju-ae's style has evolved significantly. In 2022, she wore a white fluffy fleece, appearing as a child. By 2023, she mimicked her mother's style, leading to the "Little Ri" phase. Since mid-2024, her clothing has shifted to sharp suits, smart shoes, sunglasses, and leather jackets like her father's. The personal branding research institute Jium & Gitdeum identified three phases: childlike clothing (November 2022 to August 2023), mother-inspired (September 2023 to early 2024), and full-scale succession narrative (from mid-2024).
Horse Decorations Signal Bloodline Status
During the 75th Korean People's Army founding anniversary parade in February 2023, Kim Ju-ae's personal horse was adorned with gold, elaborate decorations, setting it apart from other horses. The style echoed decorations used for horses ridden by Kim Jong-un and his sister Kim Yo-jong during a 2009 Paektu Mountain cavalry march, which analysts interpret as a statement of bloodline status and heir designation.
