Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown will appear in Manchester next month for a special one-off event. The former leader, who served from 2007 to 2010, will be at New Century on Hanover Street in the NOMA district near Victoria Station on September 3 to promote his latest book, The Future Starts With Us.
In Conversation with Frank Cottrell-Boyce
The in-conversation event will see Brown discuss matters with award-winning screenwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce, known for 24 Hour Party People. The political figure 'draws on his decades of experience in politics and years at the very heart of Parliament'.
Attendees will receive a copy of the book, described as 'more than a guide to our present turmoil', offering a practical and hopeful roadmap to 'renew the global order, and set us on a more equitable and sustainable course'. In the book, Brown argues that the future will 'not be decided by the declarations of presidents or prime ministers or at conferences or summits, but by citizens becoming actively engaged in their communities and by what we choose to do together'.
Bookstore Behind the Event
The event has been arranged by Stockport book shop Simply Books, voted the Independent Bookshop of the Year for the North of England at the 2025 British Book Awards. Founded by mother-and-son Karen and Ben Johns two years ago, the Bramhall store has hosted events with authors including Cecelia Ahern and Anthony Horowitz, and recently with Lorraine Kelly.
Simply Books will open a second venue in Stockport called Prologue at Weir Mill, a bookshop, bar and coffee shop set to open later this year. Co-owner Ben told the M.E.N: "We think we've come up with something which will fit in perfectly in the area. By day, it'll be a bookshop and coffee shop and then by night, it'll turn into a bar and live events venue - but it will also be somewhere chilled and relaxed for people to spend their evenings."
