Andy Burnham, an Everton season ticket holder and now the favourite to become the next Prime Minister, has made clear his commitment to the club and his desire to overhaul football's video assistant referee (VAR) system. Following Sir Keir Starmer's resignation, Burnham, who recently returned to Parliament after winning the Makerfield by-election, has 1/50 odds to lead the country.
Burnham's Unwavering Loyalty to Everton
In 2015, Burnham, born in Aintree, vowed he would never give up his Everton season ticket, even if he became Prime Minister. He told Fubar Radio: "No, never. No, never. I will always go and watch Everton. Always. All my life. It will never change." This pledge remains significant as only two previous Prime Ministers have hailed from Merseyside, both in the 19th century: Edward Smith-Stanley, the 14th Earl of Derby, and William Ewart Gladstone.
Proposed VAR Abolition
Just last month, the 56-year-old told ITV News he would ban VAR if given the power. When asked a quickfire question about VAR, Burnham replied: "Gone! Get rid. I'll tell you why. It's killing spontaneity in the ground. I'm a season ticket holder at Everton. Killing spontaneity, you can't celebrate a goal because you think someone, somewhere in an industrial unit is going to rule it out. So, that's a bad thing. But number two, it doesn't get decisions right. You could put up with that if it got the decisions right, but it doesn't get the decisions right and it's not consistent. It takes a decision one week for one favoured team and then doesn't do the same thing the next. So, it's killing spontaneity, it's not getting decisions right. Get rid."
Impact on Football and Politics
Burnham's stance resonates with many fans who criticise VAR for disrupting the flow of the game. If he becomes Prime Minister, his influence could extend beyond politics into football governance, potentially pushing for changes to the sport's regulations. His odds of 1/50 reflect strong confidence in his leadership bid, making his Everton-related promises a notable aspect of his public persona.
