A woman has shared her heartbreak after being removed from her brother's wedding party because the bride allegedly deemed her 'too large' following the birth of her third child. The incident, which unfolded in Utah, has sparked discussions about body shaming and superficial wedding expectations.
Family Exclusion Over Appearance
The woman, who remains anonymous, took to Reddit to recount her experience. Her younger brother, who had been dating his fiancée for just four months, initially asked all three of his sisters to be bridesmaids. The family, who are Mormon, planned a small temple ceremony followed by a larger reception.
However, about a month after the engagement, the woman noticed a shift. When her brother shared a wedding color palette in the family group chat, she asked who had been chosen as bridesmaids and groomsmen, assuming the colors were for the wedding party. He read her message but never replied.
She later discovered through her younger sister that only one of the three sisters had been selected as a bridesmaid. While initially disappointed, she accepted the couple's decision—until her sister showed her a private message from the bride explaining the exclusions.
The Bride's Explanation
The message reportedly stated that the woman was excluded because she is 'too large.' She noted, 'I am about 15lbs overweight due to having my third child six months ago.' Her other sister was excluded because of her piercings.
The woman said, 'It clearly hurt my feelings even more. It also hurt that my brother was too cowardly to tell me I wasn't part of the wedding. Me and my sister don't look good enough for the wedding party.'
Strict Dress Code for All Guests
The situation worsened when she learned that the color palette was not just for the wedding party but for all guests, including children. She explained, 'The colour palette was for all the wedding guests, including children, down to exactly what colour tie my sons should wear and that they must have suspenders.'
She added, 'I'm not part of the wedding, but I'm expected to buy new clothes that fit into three approved colours for me, my husband and our three children.'
Broader Implications
The woman concluded, 'It's all just bugging me and blows my mind how weddings have become so superficial.' Her story has resonated with many online, highlighting the pressures and hurt caused by rigid appearance standards in family events.
