Pop sensation Meghan Trainor has candidly disclosed that she has been undergoing "heavy therapy" to work on her marriage to actor Daryl Sabara. The 32-year-old singer, who shares three children with her Spy Kids star husband, 33, revealed that focusing intensely on parenting responsibilities led to their relationship being "pushed to the side," sparking a series of arguments that necessitated professional intervention.
Marriage Counseling Amid Album Creation
Trainor, who is preparing to release her upcoming seventh studio album, Toy With Me, on April 24, told Us Weekly on Wednesday, "I'm in heavy therapy." She elaborated, "I was in marriage counseling while doing this album," before adding optimistically that she and Sabara are "so good now that I recommend it to everyone." The couple, married since 2018, are parents to sons Riley, five, and Barry, two, as well as daughter Mikey, whom they welcomed via surrogacy in January.
Parenting Challenges and Communication Breakdown
Reflecting on the strains of early parenthood, Trainor explained, "But that's where having the young kids, we learned, one through five, your marriage gets pushed to the side, and then you're like: 'Why are we fighting? We're on the same team.'" She detailed how minor disagreements escalated, stating, "We started marriage counseling because we realized when we were even having little, tiny arguments. We were living in full different realities." The All About That Bass hitmaker noted that during conflicts, they would often say, "Hey, we're not even fighting about the same thing," highlighting a profound disconnect.
Key Lessons and Relationship Revival
Trainor emphasized that communication has become "key" in their renewed partnership. She shared a crucial rule they now follow: never going to bed without resolving an argument. "You just can't hold anything in because it builds resentment, and resentment is a relationship killer," she advised, underscoring the importance of addressing issues promptly to prevent emotional buildup.
The therapy has yielded significant improvements, with Trainor reporting, "Now we can look at each other and read each other's minds. We never bicker anymore, and we're always there for each other on a different level." She insisted their relationship is now much healthier, and arguments have largely ceased, attributing this positive shift to their commitment to counseling.
Support During Public Scrutiny
This revelation follows Trainor's previous comments crediting her husband and their therapist for supporting her through intense public criticism. During an appearance on the Not Gonna Lie podcast, she discussed facing online trolls over her weight loss and the decision to use a surrogate for their daughter's birth. "I didn't look [at the comments]," she said, acknowledging the negativity. "And it was a cloud of tears every night of just worry. I want my daughter to come to this world and not everyone attack her for the way she got here."
Trainor expressed gratitude for her support system, sharing, "All of that went through my head. But my team was with me, my therapist was with me, everyone was so supportive. My husband was like, 'Everyone can suck our a**.'"
Surrogacy Decision and Health Concerns
The couple's choice to welcome their third child via surrogacy was driven by health considerations. Trainor explained, "[We had] heartbreaking, big decision making to do. And I was struggling with my health and almost towards an autoimmune disease. So there's so many conversations back and forth. Then we were like, the safest way is to do it through a surrogate." This difficult decision-making process added another layer of stress to their relationship, further underscoring the need for therapeutic support.
Through open dialogue and professional guidance, Meghan Trainor and Daryl Sabara have navigated the complexities of marriage, parenting, and public life, emerging with a stronger, more resilient bond.
