President Donald Trump has once again ignited controversy by targeting transgender athletes, this time invoking New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart. During a press conference from the Oval Office, Trump claimed Dart would be the 'greatest athlete in the history of women's sports,' continuing his vocal opposition to transgender participation in athletics.
Trump's Remarks on Dart and Women's Sports
Trump recounted a conversation with the rookie quarterback, saying, 'I said, "How do you think you do in women's sports, Jaxson?" He said, "Pretty good, sir." He didn't know I was joking. He was not worried. Let me put it that way.' The President added, 'He would have been the greatest athlete in the history of women's sports. You got to see the size of this guy, like a male model, and he's going to be a great quarterback.'
These comments come amid Trump's broader campaign against transgender athletes, which included an executive order encouraging the NCAA to ban their participation. The NCAA subsequently complied, adjusting its rules for college sports.
Controversy Within the Giants Locker Room
Dart's decision to speak at a Trump rally in May for New York congressman Mike Lawler's re-election campaign caused friction with teammates. Linebacker Abdul Carter publicly called out Dart, but the rift appeared to heal as organized team activities began. Carter later stated, 'I don't want him to say he's sorry. Stand on what you believe in, but it can't be a problem if I stand on what I believe in. As long as we have that understanding, it's all good.'
Dart addressed the situation, expressing love for his teammates regardless of political or religious differences. He said, 'I can honestly say that I love every single one of my brothers, my teammates on this team, regardless of politics, regardless of religious beliefs, regardless of anything that may be different between us.'
Dart's Future Political Involvement
Despite the rally appearance, Dart indicated he would avoid further political entanglements. 'I also understand that in this world, politics can be a sensitive matter, a sensitive topic. I also understand that I am the quarterback of the New York Giants, and that involves a lot of responsibility,' he said. 'It's under a limelight, under a microscope, and there's a lot that comes with that.'
The quarterback's comments suggest a desire to focus on football, leaving political controversies behind as the Giants prepare for the upcoming season.
