President Donald Trump has officially cancelled the 'Freedom 250' concerts scheduled for the National Mall in Washington, D.C., after most artists withdrew. The concerts will be replaced by a rally headlined by Trump himself, with a performance by Lee Greenwood.
Trump announced the change on social media, promising 'the Greatest Rally, EVER!' and 'a Rally to end all Rallies!' He criticised the acts that pulled out, including Morris Day, Bret Michaels, Martina McBride, Young MC, the Commodores and Milli Vanilli, citing nonpartisan concerns and security issues. Only Vanilla Ice had remained committed.
The event will feature Greenwood performing 'God Bless the U.S.A.' and tenor Christopher Macchio singing classics such as 'Nessun Dorma' and 'God Bless America.' Military bands, including the U.S. Army Band 'Pershing's Own' and the Marine Band, will also perform.
Trump stated that after the musical performances, he would take the stage as the main attraction. The Freedom 250 initiative was set up as a public-private partnership, but its CEO, Keith Krach, has not been heard from since the controversy erupted.
The president founded Freedom 250 as an alternative to the bipartisan America 250 commission planning the nation's 250th birthday celebrations. Four days ago, Trump posted 'cancel it' in reference to the concerts, which has now been enacted.
