Coronation Street has confirmed a harrowing new storyline for Betsy Swain and Dylan Wilson, exploring the life-altering dangers of non-fatal strangulation. In Wednesday's episode, available to stream on ITVX, Betsy (Sydney Martin) is found unconscious by Ryan (Ryan Prescott) and rushed to hospital, where doctors confirm she suffered a stroke caused by a blood clot from neck artery damage due to temporary loss of circulation.
Betsy's stroke and recovery
After a second stroke, an embarrassed Betsy reveals that Dylan (Liam McCheyne) strangled her during consensual sex, despite both believing the pressure applied was minimal. Over the coming months, viewers will witness Betsy's difficult recovery as she moves from hospital to home, facing substantial life changes including physical and emotional challenges at a young age.
Expert collaboration
Coronation Street worked extensively with the Institute for Addressing Strangulation (IFAS), the Stroke Association, and Safeline. Specialists reviewed scripts and consulted with the production team and actors to present the storyline responsibly. Producer Kate Brooks said: "Coronation Street has always pushed boundaries when it comes to telling challenging, thought-provoking stories, and this story is no exception. By consulting extensively with IFAS, the Stroke Association and Safeline, we aimed to handle Betsy's journey with the care and sensitivity it deserves."
Professor Cath White, Medical Director at IFAS, added: "Non-fatal strangulation can result in life-changing injuries, including stroke, even where there are no visible external signs. There is no safe way to strangle. We hope this storyline helps increase understanding of the risks."
