NBA legend Charles Barkley has publicly revealed that he rejected an invitation to the wedding of Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift, which took place on July 3 at Madison Square Garden. The event, attended by an estimated 1,100 guests, was a high-profile celebrity affair, but Barkley was among the few who declined.
Barkley's Explanation
Speaking on Philadelphia 97.5 The Fanatic, Barkley explained his decision while discussing the Philadelphia 76ers' trade for Jaylen Brown. He stated, 'I don't go to weddings or funerals. But I did get an invite, and I politely declined because I thought it was going to be a crap show.' He added, 'I love Travis and Jason, and I've only met Taylor one time, but yeah, I did get an invite. But I said, that's just too much. I just want to hang out and play golf, and I don't want to dress up and all that other stuff. But I appreciate the invitation; it was pretty special.'
Backlash from Swifties
Barkley's remarks describing the wedding as a 'crap show' drew immediate criticism from Taylor Swift fans on social media. One user wrote, 'This is very rude and disrespectful for no reason. They were kind enough to invite you and this is what you say in response? I'm glad you didn't go.' Another commented, 'This is not the flex he thinks it is.'
Wedding Details Emerge
Reports from insiders provided additional details about the wedding, including that the 1,100 guests were served a buffet-style meal rather than a three-course dinner. One source told the Daily Mail, 'I couldn't believe that there was a buffet at the wedding of the year! That felt like such a tacky move. There were slightly chaotic scenes around the food carts with all these amazing A-listers having to stand in line. It wasn't quite what I expected. You know Julia Roberts was there. And Steven Spielberg.' Another guest reportedly called it 'a bit of a s--t show.'
NFL Context
Travis Kelce is expected to rejoin the Kansas City Chiefs for training camp in the coming weeks, with speculation that this may be his final NFL season. The wedding reportedly saw many NFL players in attendance, though half of the Chiefs' dressing room allegedly declined their invitations.
