Channel 5 has postponed the broadcast of a new drama about the 1996 murder of Lee Harvey following objections from his daughter, Danielle Harvey. The programme, Under Suspicion: Tracie Andrews - Lover, Liar, Killer, had been scheduled for Monday, July 13, but will now be replaced by an episode of Forensics: Murder Scene.
Background of the Case
Tracie Andrews was convicted of murdering her fiancé, Lee Harvey, in December 1996. The 25-year-old was stabbed more than 30 times on a country lane near Alvechurch, Worcestershire. Andrews initially claimed the attacker was a "fat man with staring eyes" who pursued their vehicle, but detectives proved she had killed Harvey with a Swiss Army-type penknife following an argument. She was sentenced to life in prison but released in 2011. Since then, she has undergone thousands of pounds worth of plastic surgery to alter her appearance.
Channel 5's Decision
Channel 5 informed BirminghamLive that the programme had been withdrawn for "scheduling reasons but should be back soon." No further information was provided. The decision came after Danielle Harvey voiced her frustration on TikTok, stating that her family had not been notified about the production. "I am finding out through people sending it to me or on Facebook," she said. "What comes with Facebook are the trolls in the comments. I'm having to read comments like 'she's done her time, she's rehabilitated, leave her be, she should have stayed in jail'. I don't want to see that."
Danielle Harvey's Reaction
In a series of TikTok videos, Danielle Harvey said she does not object to such programmes being aired, as they keep her father's memory alive and ensure Andrews "is never going to live a peaceful life." However, she expressed frustration at the lack of communication from the broadcaster. "I'm easy to find, I'm on TikTok, Facebook, Instagram. It's not hard to send a message saying 'we have made this documentary, drama, it's airing on this date, we just wanted to make you aware'. We don't get any of that. We are always the last to know or we have to find out from social media." She added: "It will be 30 years in December since she took my dad's life. To people who watch it, it's just another drama to them - to us it's real life. This is our reality. It's our nightmare and our life sentence."
Impact and Next Steps
Channel 5 has not announced a new air date for the programme. The broadcaster's decision to pull the drama highlights ongoing sensitivities around true-crime content and the impact on victims' families. Danielle Harvey's public protest has drawn attention to the need for broadcasters to consult with families before airing such productions.
