Fans of period dramas are celebrating the BBC adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South as a 'masterpiece', praising its believable performances, political depth, and captivating Victorian setting. The series, set in the 1850s against the backdrop of the Great Exhibition of 1851, has drawn comparisons to beloved classics like Pride and Prejudice.
Authentic Performances and Social Commentary
One fan on IMDB, a history teacher, wrote: 'I'm very critical of adaptations, especially those that sentimentalise the past. This is a superb rendering of the spirit of the industrial age and the many facets of class struggle within it. It's also a richly romantic love story. The acting by all the cast is uniformly excellent, but Richard Armitage as Thornton is a standout.'
The series follows Margaret Hale, played by Daniela Denby-Ashe, who is forced to move from southern England to the industrial North after her father's death. She struggles to adapt to the harsh realities of the industrial era and clashes with the Thornton family, cotton mill owners who resent her southern manners. Over time, her compassion for them grows, as does her attraction to John Thornton, portrayed by Richard Armitage.
A Love Story with Political Themes
Another fan posted: 'North and South took me completely by surprise... Elizabeth Gaskell's work is far more than a mere period romance. This is social commentary and a love story, the struggle of workers and masters, as well as the misunderstanding of the intellectuals that forms a triangle still alive today. The lead characters all take on a social conscience that grows with their love for each other.'
Viewers have also highlighted the natural acting, with one saying: 'The acting is superb - the lead characters John and Hannah Thornton, Margaret Hale, and union man Nicholas Higgins are so natural that you forget you are watching a movie. The supporting characters are also strong, making this an unexpected gem.'
Unexpected Success on BBC iPlayer
Upon its initial broadcast, the BBC had low expectations for the programme, and it received minimal publicity. However, it rapidly gained momentum, largely due to Richard Armitage's breakout performance, which invited comparisons to Colin Firth's Mr. Darcy in the 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. North and South is now streaming on BBC iPlayer.
