BBC presenter Mark Chapman was forced to address the 'elephant in the room' during live World Cup coverage on Saturday evening, after pundit Micah Richards called attention to his bold shirt and the network's studio location in Salford rather than the United States.
Chapman's Shirt Sparks Banter
Chapman was anchoring the BBC's live broadcast of the Netherlands' match against Sweden on June 20, 2026. After welcoming viewers and introducing a nostalgic segment on the Cruyff turn, he turned to present studio pundits Micah Richards, Thomas Frank, and Ellen White. Richards quickly interjected: 'Let's address the elephant in the room first.' A surprised Chapman replied, 'There is no elephant in the room,' to which Richards retorted: 'The shirt! It is a bit fancy for you, Chappers.'
The 52-year-old presenter was wearing a striking red and black shirt. After praise from Frank and White, Richards remarked: 'Are you going to Miami? Are you going to New York? I know you are going over there for radio, but you are not over yet.' Chapman fired back: 'It is a lovely Saturday afternoon here. Where are we? Houston — and I thought I would just keep the vibe. Can I talk about football now?'
BBC Studio Location Under Scrutiny
The BBC has faced criticism for basing its World Cup studio in Salford rather than in the United States, where the tournament is being held. In contrast, ITV's studio offers a striking backdrop of the Brooklyn Bridge. Earlier in the week, MLS club Houston Dynamo poked fun at the BBC after a glaring mistake during a live broadcast. During Portugal's draw with DR Congo, Chapman was joined by Wayne Rooney, Olivier Giroud, and Gael Clichy, with a screen behind them displaying a doctored Houston skyline featuring dramatic mountain scenery — despite the host city sitting just 105 feet above sea level. Houston Dynamo shared a doctored photo of their Shell Energy Stadium with a snow-capped mountain backdrop, captioned: 'You just can't beat this view.'
Gary Lineker's Dig at Former Colleagues
Former BBC stalwart Gary Lineker quipped that his ex-colleagues were operating from 'a green box in Salford'. The 'elephant in the room' that Richards alluded to may also relate to Lineker joining ITV's tournament coverage. Lineker appeared as a surprise ITV guest for Saturday night's group stage encounter between Germany and Ivory Coast. He had been scheduled to front the BBC's coverage but left ahead of schedule amid a row over his social media activity. Lineker now records his 'The Rest is Football' podcast from New York, alongside Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, after securing a lucrative deal with Netflix.
