Argentine amateur Mateo Pulcini trolled England fans at The Open by copying football star Enzo Fernandez's celebration after sinking a 40-foot putt on the 18th green at Royal Birkdale. The 25-year-old cupped his ears, mimicking Fernandez's gesture from the World Cup, just one day after Argentina eliminated England from the tournament.
Pulcini Admits Poor Performance but Savors Moment
Pulcini admitted he didn't play well overall, but the long putt on the final hole made his day better. “I didn’t want to do anything to make fun of the match that you guys lost because the tournament here has been unbelievable,” he said. “That celebration came from a 40-foot putt. I was pretty excited, that came to my mind, and I did it.”
Light-Hearted Banter with Fans
The Argentine expected some backlash from the crowd and got it. “I was expecting a few boos on the first tee and they came, some of them, but there were almost none. I love it. I really don’t mind. It’s part of the fun,” Pulcini said. He praised the fans, calling them “spectacular” and noting they cheered for him as well.
World Cup Reflections
Pulcini watched every second of the World Cup match where Argentina beat England. He commented on the game: “At the beginning it was like England was having a good game. England was having the ball. Once England made the goal, they become like Argentina was doing the same thing last match. They started defending, but you cannot defend against Lionel Messi. He's unbelievable.”
