Time Season 3 Returns with 'Heartbreaking' Young Offenders Story

The BBC drama Time returns for its third series tonight, with stars describing it as the most "heartbreaking" season yet. The spin-off from The Split concluded on Monday, leaving viewers seeking a new programme. Time features Happy Valley star Siobhan Finneran as prison Chaplain Marie-Louise and Doctor Who legend David Tennant as prison officer Bobby Bailey.

A Harrowing Look at Youth Imprisonment

The opening episode airs tonight, with the second instalment on Monday, 12 October. Finneran teased the new series: "All of the series are heartbreaking, but I think this one feels harder because it involves young people. That's not to take away from any of the devastating stories we've seen in series one and two, but these are young men who are only really starting out in life and they're already in trouble."

"That's what I'm finding upsetting about this one. What we cover in this series is the fact that these young boys are locked up for so many hours of the day. They haven't got here because they've been behaving themselves, obviously, but it does feel like a very cruel way to treat somebody. I think, as human beings, we're all very quick to judge somebody who is in prison", reports the Mirror.

Cast and Plot Details

The BBC teased that tragedy strikes as Marie-Louise clashes with veteran officer Bailey, who knows more than he is letting on. Meanwhile, two young offenders endure the harrowing initial weeks of their imprisonment. The series also features Daniel Ryan, Louis McCartney, Chukwubuikem Molokwu, Ollie McNulty and Ethaniel Davy.

Tennant said of his character's role: "Something happens towards the end of the first episode and Bobby’s left in a position where he knows more than the authorities do. He has to reckon with himself as to whether it’s right to be honest and truthful or defend his mate."

Viewer Reactions

Viewers have shared reactions on IMDb reviews regarding the series and its earlier seasons, with one writing: "Masterpiece. Acting is so good I felt I was watching a documentary. Every single member of the cast was convincing."

"The writing was excellent, I was on the edge of my seat most of the time. Should be shown to young offenders and anyone who drinks and drives as a deterrent," another shared. A third commented: "Fantastic drama at its best. Superb performances from all the actors. A real gritty true tale of life in the modern day prison system."

"This is as good as it gets. Tough to watch- brutal but raw, honest and amazing," someone else added. A final fan concluded: "Another Jimmy McGovern masterpiece! A massively impactful drama depicting the many ways people can end up in prison. I kept clicking next episode and watching late into the night."

"Wonderfully acted by Stephen Graham and Sean Bean. While raw, gritty and somewhat disturbing, it was an absolutely brilliant British drama - could not fault it." Time season 3 starts on BBC One tonight, October 11, at 9pm.
