The Waltons Returns to UK TV After Decade-Long Break

The beloved family saga The Waltons is making a long-awaited return to British screens after a decade-long absence. The classic series, set in the 1930s, will air on Freeview channel Great TV from Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

Based on creator Earl Hamner Jr's childhood memories, the show chronicles the trials and triumphs of the Walton family during the Great Depression and Second World War. It originally ran for nine seasons on CBS from 1972 to 1981.

Great TV has secured exclusive rights to broadcast all 219 episodes. Starting January 6, two consecutive episodes will air every weekday, with a Sunday omnibus recapping the week's highlights.

Marketing director Kate Gartland said: 'We are absolutely delighted that we can bring back this wonderful, iconic piece of TV magic to viewers. This return also offers a new generation of British viewers the chance to discover why The Waltons remains one of television's most enduring family dramas.'

Fans have praised the show on IMDb, with one calling it the 'best show ever' and another saying it is 'one of the best family-friendly TV series ever written'. The series is known for its iconic 'Good night' sign-off.

British audiences first saw The Waltons on BBC One and BBC Two in 1974, with broadcasts continuing until 1983. The complete series will now be available for a new generation to enjoy.
