Viewers of the Australian version of The 1% Club were left astonished after all nine finalists failed to answer the one percent question, missing out on a share of the $100,000AUD (£53,553) prize. The popular quiz show, which airs in the UK on ITV with host Lee Mack, challenges 100 contestants with questions that test common sense and intelligence.
During a nail-biting episode, host Jim Jefferies presented the finalists with a perplexing sequence: 1, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 1, 3, 1, 2, 2, 1, 1. Contestants had 30 seconds to determine the next number, but none could crack the code.
After the timer expired, Jefferies revealed the answer: 13112221. He explained that the sequence is generated by reading the previous line aloud: one one, then two ones, then one two and one one, and so on. The final string is one three, one one, two twos and two ones. Noting the failure, Jefferies quipped, 'Ah man, that sucks.'
The episode quickly gained attention on social media, with viewers commenting on the difficulty. One TikTok user said, 'Unless you've seen a puzzle like this before, I'd be amazed if someone got it within that amount of time.' Another added, 'Hard to get in 30 seconds if you've never seen it before. But I'm guessing that's the whole point!'
