At least seven people, including five teachers, were killed in a shooting at a school in Thailand, with the 14-year-old suspect also dying. The incident occurred at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province, northwest of Bangkok.
Police found the suspect's grandparents dead in the family home, believed to have been shot before the suspect went to the school. The total death toll, including the suspect, stands at eight.
Witnesses describe chaos
A witness told reporters that students hid inside a classroom while hearing gunshots from another building before police cleared a way for them to leave. About an hour after the shooting, people stood outside the school comforting each other as police and first responders worked inside.
Authorities gave conflicting information on casualties. Trairong told Channel 3 that the shooter was hospitalized in serious condition, with 15 others injured, two in critical condition. He said three teachers and three students were killed. Health Minister Pattana Promphat said 22 people were injured, nine in critical condition, with some injuries from falls.
Official statements
Deputy Interior Minister Polapee Suwunchwee told reporters that five teachers died and that the shooter killed his grandparents before going to the school. He also said the shooter died at a hospital. Trairong said the motive was still being investigated, and the gun was believed to have been taken from a family member.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul offered condolences and ordered officials to take care of victims. In February, a 17-year-old stole a gun from police and opened fire at a school in southern Thailand, killing one and injuring two. In 2023, a 14-year-old was accused of a shooting at a Bangkok mall.
