Lawrence Robb struggled to hold back tears as he reflected on his Strictly Come Dancing exit during an appearance on Monday's It Takes Two, telling host Ellie Taylor that being voted out 'in a weird way it kind of felt like we won.'
The actor left the competition following Halloween Week, when Bethany Antonia and Nancy Xu, Lawrence and Jowita Przystał, and Jaime Winstone and Carlos Gu found themselves in the show's first ever three-way dance-off. During Sunday's results show, judges Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood and Anton Du Beke were asked to choose who they wanted to see leave rather than vote to save, and all three opted to send Lawrence and Jowita home.
An Emotional Final Interview
Speaking on the November 2 edition of the companion show, Lawrence admitted it was 'lovely to have' his family in the audience, despite the outcome, and that at least they got to see him dance twice. He also revealed he had been expecting a dance-off the previous week.
'I was semi in my head on borrowed time as last week I thought I would be in the dance-off,' he said. 'I was saying this to Jowita, despite getting voted out it was bittersweet because it in a weird way it kind of felt like we won.'
He added: 'What I mean by that is obviously we didn't win because we were voted out but everybody swarms on and you get 10 minutes of love and hugs and joy and and how could that be that much different - other than lifting the glitterball - everyone gives you a cuddle and it felt like we did win something.'
'You've Already Won'
Lawrence also shared that it was his idea to lift Jowita onto his shoulders after the result, with the professional dancer saying she agreed and 'somehow' managed to get down appropriately in the dress she was wearing.
Asked about the three-way dance-off, he told Ellie: 'That's not nice. I took on the mantra this week of enjoying it as much as I could and in the past I allowed slightly more negative criticisms from the judges to effect my training and this was the first week I was going to - I'm just going to enjoy it as much as I could.'
He became visibly emotional at the end of the interview, with Jowita holding his hand as he was shown his best bits. Before closing, he offered a message to his former co-stars still in the competition, saying the most meaningful part of his time on the show was 'meeting an incredible person in this girl here' and the 'sense of family and the joy that it brings every week.'
'The idea of not knowing how to do any ballroom at all and learning it in what three and a half days it's just wild,' he said. 'Also, I think that this should apply to all the couples - or celebrities sorry, doing Strictly, you've already won. Anything on top of that is icing, cherry on top of the cake. You've won.'
Strictly It Takes Two continues tomorrow at 6.30pm on BBC Two and iPlayer.
