Sophie Habboo and Jamie Laing Premiere Disney+ Series 'Raising Chelsea'
Sophie Habboo and her husband Jamie Laing appeared deeply affectionate as they arrived at the premiere of their new Disney+ series, Raising Chelsea. The couple, who first met on E4's Made In Chelsea in 2017, tied the knot six years later in Spain and welcomed their son Ziggy in December 2023.
Intimate Series Details and Premiere Highlights
Their three-part fly-on-the-wall documentary series, available to stream from April 2nd, chronicles over a year and a half of their lives as they prepare for their first child. At the premiere, Sophie, 31, showcased her remarkable postpartum figure in a black lace dress, just three months after giving birth. Jamie, 37, embodied the role of a new father, dressed in a white vest top paired with a smart black jacket and trousers.
The celebration was a family affair, with Sophie's parents Sarah and Patrique, her sister Georgia, brother-in-law Tom Berry, as well as Jamie's mother Penny and sister Emily all in attendance. Other notable guests included Jamie's former Made In Chelsea co-star Sam Thompson, new podcast hosts Molly Smith and Tom Clare, and Canadian comedian Katherine Ryan, who hosted the event.
Trailer Reveals Emotional Birth Complications
A brand-new trailer for the series reveals poignant moments, including Sophie breaking down in tears as Jamie discloses that traumatic birth complications necessitated an emergency C-section. The couple filmed the birth of their two-month-old son, Ziggy, for the Disney+ series after doctors informed them the baby's arm was through the cervix, requiring an urgent change to Sophie's birthing plan.
In gripping scenes, Jamie is seen reassuring a terrified Sophie as they hold each other's hands during the birth, with both rejoicing upon hearing Ziggy's first cry. Speaking to the camera, former Strictly star Jamie explained, 'Bad news is that the baby, his arm is through the cervix. She needs to have an emergency C-section.'
Journey to Parenthood and Personal Struggles
The trailer begins with an excited Jamie and Sophie en route to the private maternity unit, The Lindo Wing at St Mary's Hospital. Sophie exclaimed, 'We think it's happening,' while Jamie added, 'Let's go guys!' Reflecting on their relationship, Jamie noted, 'We met on a legendary reality show, Made In Chelsea and things have been crazy ever since… TV shows, brands, podcasts, and we're having a baby.'
Sophie shared her intimate feelings about motherhood, saying, 'I've always wanted to be a mum… pregnancy is a rollercoaster. The excitement of being a mum and the love I feel…' However, she also revealed anxieties, with Jamie comforting her, 'Nothing is the matter, I promise you.'
Challenges and Family Dynamics
The series doesn't shy away from difficult moments, such as an argument at their old West London apartment where Jamie shouts, 'I'm stressed. I'm tired,' and Sophie retorts, 'You just go behind my back. That's so unacceptable.' Despite running two businesses, including his confectionery brand Candy Kittens, Jamie admits that at home, Sophie is in charge, stating, 'The dynamic between Sophie and I, she's the boss and I'm the intern.'
Family members feature prominently, with Sophie's influencer sister Georgia and close friends like Jamie's former Made In Chelsea co-star Oliver Proudlock making appearances. Jamie's mother, Penny, humorously remarks to the camera, 'This pregnancy, you'd think the Messiah was arriving.'
Post-Birth Reflections and Body Image Pressures
By the time Ziggy is born, the couple is filled with happiness and relief. Sophie admits, 'I've never felt more excited to meet somebody in my whole life.' Proving he's a hands-on father, Jamie is seen changing Ziggy's nappy, though he struggles, saying, 'Oh lord, this is chaos, pee has gone everywhere.'
The series also follows Jamie and Sophie as they plan for Ziggy and renovate their new home just in time for his arrival. Sophie has opened up about the pressures women face to 'snap back' after giving birth, noting she felt judged by other mothers. She explained, 'I didn't necessarily feel that pressure from the public. Weirdly, there's more pressure on mums that you get judged either way. If you haven't snapped back, people are going to say something. If you have snapped back, people are going to say something.'
She added, 'I am actually finding that, and I didn't expect that. There are some people commenting on the snapping back saying it's too soon and it's not realistic. I just don't think you can please anyone… Whether you've snapped back or not, it just shouldn't be a thing.'
Personal Growth and Liberation
Since welcoming Ziggy, Sophie says she has developed more gratitude for herself and her appearance, finding it liberating as a new mother. She shared, 'I feel stronger and I have much more respect for myself. I speak more kindly to myself. Ziggy's my priority and I don't put as much pressure on what I look like because my brain is thinking about him and it's actually quite freeing and liberating.'
Raising Chelsea will be available for streaming on Disney+ starting April 2nd, offering an intimate look into the couple's journey through pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood.
