Netflix's latest family adventure, Enola Holmes, starring Millie Bobby Brown, offers a feminine twist on the Sherlock Holmes universe. Originally slated for a cinema release with Warner Bros., the film now streams on Netflix from September 23.
Brown plays Enola, the forgotten younger sister of Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and Mycroft (Sam Claflin). When their eccentric mother Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter) vanishes, Enola defies her brothers to investigate, becoming entangled with runaway aristocrat Lord Tewksbury (Louis Partridge).
The film is a lightweight, breezy take on the classic detective story, lacking in consequence but offering fun escapism. Brown carries the film with cheekiness and charisma, though the supporting cast is underused. Cavill makes a dull Sherlock, while Claflin is effective as the condescending Mycroft.
Bonham Carter's small role as Eudoria is pivotal, with her chemistry with Brown providing some of the best scenes. Touching on themes of feminism and destiny, Enola Holmes offers a modern twist but is ultimately a stepping stone for Brown's career rather than a memorable film in its own right.
